Research Topic

Communication experts generally agree that when two people are engaged in a face-to-face conversation, only a small fraction of the total message they share is contained in the words they use. A large portion of the message is contained in vocal elements such as tone of voice, accent, speed, volume, and inflection. The largest part of the message--and arguably the most important--is conveyed by kinesics, or the combination of gestures, postures, facial expressions, clothing, and even scent. Kinesics plays a dominant role in determining the image that others have of us. On a clinical level, kinesics is more than bedside manner. Nonverbal communication reveals what we really think and feel. Sometimes body language speaks volumes and we can interpret it easily. At other times it is amazingly quick and subtle, and if we don't keep our eyes open, we may miss some important messages. Nonverbal communication is more eloquent, honest, and accurate than verbal communication. It tends to be more spontaneous, less controlled or manipulated, and is the window to our true feelings and attitudes. Words can deceive, many people do not mean what they say, or say what they mean but subconscious body language reveals what we are really thinking and feeling.

Background

A new media exhibit designed to push the boundaries of digital identity. The project is created with projection mapping techniques together with illustration, typography and videos, using software developed as part of a larger research project. It will be project on a selected prototype of architectural size condominium types of building. Nevertheless, this projection mapping will highlight about judging behaviors and actions in living society through gestures, non verbal communication, appearances and looks..

Problem Identification

An estimated 67% to 93% of human communication is non-verbal, and your body language reveals your internal emotional state. Whether someone's parents just died, or whether they just got promoted to CEO, you can tell by observing their body language. Body language is often portrayed by the media as the key to understanding peoples' feelings, thoughts and behaviors. There will be a relation between body language through non verbal communication and recent society in this world.

Aim and Objectives

- Understand how non verbal impacts perceptions

- Investigates role of body gestures in human being communication

- Recognize the different pattern of body gestures and meaning

- Express my thoughts and opinions about society's gestures

Motivation

What about those instances when we judge others in our minds without saying a word? Have you ever met someone and instantly upon seeing and or hearing them, you pass judgment? Let’s say you’re introduced to a man who is wearing ripped jeans and a white t-shirt with dreadlocks in his hair. Maybe your first reaction will be that he is poor, dirty and uneducated, maybe even homeless and then you later discover that he has a Masters in music, is filthy rich and dates a supermodel. Martin Luther says “Judge people by their character, not their color skin”. This statement means that in judging other men, skin color should be ignored--that it should not be a factor in evaluating their competence or moral stature.

Ideas and Concept

A video projection on the windows of Zeno X Gallery, part of Into the Light, an international project for contemporary art with video and light installations in public spaces in Antwerp South (2009).

A work created for a high-tech tower (building of Modular lighting systems), Roeselare, Belgium (2008). The work is based on "2001, a space odessey" by Stanley Kubrick and shows the evolution of an organic form turning into a black square (symbol of a mechanized world, one single pixel). The red 'breathing' refers to HAL's logic memory system. In general, it is a giant alarm call for the earth's bad condition.
