Critique 2 : Critical Writing

I have described how languages shape the way we think about space, time, colors, and objects. Other studies have found effects of language on how people construe events, reason about causality, keep track of number, understand material substance, perceive and experience emotion, reason about other people's minds, choose to take risks, and even in the way they choose professions and spouses.8 Taken together, these results show that linguistic processes are pervasive in most fundamental domains of thought, unconsciously shaping us from the nuts and bolts of cognition and perception to our loftiest abstract notions and major life decisions. Language is central to our experience of being human, and the languages we speak profoundly shape the way we think, the way we see the world, the way we live our lives.
How Does Our Language Shape The Way We Think by Lera Boroditsky

This morning I meet my former company director. While on my way to meet him, my friend and I drive pass through the guard house a little bit far because he does not know the exact location to park the car. Suddenly, we hear a sound from the guard house a loud screaming "WOI" to us. I go out from the car and walk towards him. I know at that moment, I am extremely angry. I stare at his face and throw him a fake smile. He recognize me, a person who use to greet him every morning even though he's just few years older. He reply me with a smile and blabber fuzzy things. I don't give a damn at that moment. I don't respect his manners.

Through many readings of articles, journals, news, we hear so many misunderstandings between many kinds of races, religions and people ourselves. Sometimes the speaker doesn't mean to deliver 'that' messages, but due to lack of misinterpretation, misunderstanding of body language and less attention, the message is delivered wrongly. Nowadays we spend many hours per day with Internet, we can know what happen to our classmates who we never talk to, when did she broke up with her imagination boyfriend, his favorite movie or his new gadgets in town. Internet is one of the way people speak. We speak through typing words and composition structured accordingly from ourselves. People might stop judging us through our non verbal expression because we no longer live in reality but, we can never run. Readers might judge our writing and images that we've upload. This is when we should know and learn about internet manners and etiquette.

I discover how shaping our manners and morals in language is very important. Analysis estimates 67% to 93% of human communication is non verbal. Body language, voice tone, face expressions are often portrayed as the main source to understand feelings, thought and behaviors. We can recognize until what extend his or her education levels once they speak, doesn't matter through verbal and non verbal. Unfortunately, people seldom realize that body language play the biggest part in one's life. Example in a situation between two people who has a communication problem - something happens and they start not to speak. Unfortunately silent treatment is much effective to make another one side to feel bad and guilty compare expressing anger through actions and verbals. Through silent treatment, message is deliver through 'saying' things by not saying it at all.

When someone is ostracized it affects the part of their brain called the anterior cingulate cortex. Do you know what the anterior cingulate cortex does? The anterior cingulate cortex is the part of the brain that detects pain. When you give someone the silent treatment you are causing that person physical pain. Simply by ignoring someone else’s existence you can inflict pain on them. This is what the ever popular “time out” with a child is so effective. The child feels ostracized, therefore is feeling pain even though no physical pain was inflicted on them, and therefor they want to behave so they don’t have to feel that way again.

Telepathy sounds like a spacey word that carries some old connotations. like mind-reading and mental telepathy. Some call it intuition. I like to call it non-verbal communication. How much of that goes on right now? Body language is one form that is used extensively. The main form of this communication, I believe happens to all of us everyday. Knowing what someone is feeling or what they are trying to convey, without literally interpreting the words, is the main form of non-verbal communication. Reading between the lines. Looking someone straight into the eyes, feeling what they mean rather than hearing them. A lot of us discount this ability as being real or as having any consistency to it. If you truly know that it is possible and can and does happen then the use of this ability will become more attuned.
Seth Garrison; What Language Will We Speak in The New Age?

By understand the real meaning of message that want to be deliver through empathy is possible to avoid misinterpretation in body language. For culture, the way we moves and the meaning can be different to another cultures. There will be less misunderstanding and lies when we speak to someone using non verbal languages - we speak heart to heart. When this actually happens, communication will be more honest and pure. The desire which includes inside the message will align with movements.
